In 1914, the three Brigades were commissioned by MP Montague Barlow along with the Salford Brigade Committee. The Pals battalion’s men were raised from cities such as Liverpool, Salford, Birmingham, Leeds and New Castle. On the 1st of July, 1916, the Somme offensive was launched and in that battle, the first three of Salford’s battalions were thrown at the massive defenses of the Thiepval, and many soldiers perished. (Stedman, Michael. 1996).
The first day of the battle of the Somme was the 1st of July 1916. The 15th Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers took the position in the trenches above the village of Anthwille, which lies in the Ancre valley below the Thiepval Ridge. From the 14th of June, 1916 to the 27th of June, 1916, they were rested. On the evening of 30th July 1916, they moved into the line about 300 yards west of the village of Thiepval under cover of night. To their left was the 9th Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers of 31st Ulster Division who were to be taken to the Schwaben Redoubt and immediately on their right, the other attacking battalion of 92nd Brigade, was the 16th Northumberland Fusiliers. The main objective of the 96th Brigade was the village of Thiepval. The B and C companies of the 2nd Salford Pals supported the 1st Salford Pals. A company formed the attacking force with B company in support. C Company formed the left flank attacking force with D company in support. The area that lay between the attacking line and its support was roughly 800 yards.
The Germans had been building up their defenses for the past 2 years and during this time had built up and reinforced the defenses significantly.
