Jean-Pierre Jeunet is known for excellence as his other film, Amelie corroborates this fact. A Very Long Engagement is a French romantic war film and the series of awards and accolades that greeted this film makes people that have not watched the film have the feeling that they have missed a lot. The film was the fictional storyline that was based on the experience of some individuals in the concluding stages of the First World War. The film is a must watch for everybody that loves romantic films with a spice of war scenes in it. As earlier said the film won several awards and was nominated for awards in different categories. The film won about eight awards and was nominated (but did not win) about twelve times. The nomination and the awards that the film won show the film’s quality. A Very Long Engagement is based on a novel written by Sebastien Japrisot in 1991 with the same title and it brings the details of this novel back to life. The film chronicles the search of a young woman named Mathilde Donnay (Audrey Tautou) for her fiance, Manech Langonnet (Gaspard Ulliel). Manech was one of the soldiers that took part in the First World War. Mathilde was aware that Manech could have been killed during the battle of the Somme during the First World War, but the fact that she still had hope that he was still alive showed the kind of affection that Mathilde had for Manech and this is just one of the ways that the producers of this great film brought the romantic details of the First World War back to life. A Very Long Engagement shows the pains, grief and emotions of the fiancees of the soldiers and men that took part in the First World War (Audrey Tautou, Gaspard Ulliel & Ticky Holgado). Mathilde was depicted as a young woman that battled with polio during her childhood and this made her to be disabled in her leg. The disability of Mathilde did not stop her from showing love to her fiance, Manech. A Very Long Engagement clearly showed through the love story of Mathilde and Manech that people with disabilities also have the ability to love as love knows no barriers (Audrey Tautou, Gaspard Ulliel & Ticky Holgado). Manech was sentenced to death after he was accused of injuring himself in order to excuse himself from the war with some other soldiers. He was then banished to the no man’s land, which was between the German and the French trench lines to be executed there. Mathilde learns that Manech was sentenced to death and she still had the belief that her fiance was not dead. Mathilde was of the opinion that the bond of love between them was so strong that if anything had happened to Manech she would have known. This is just one of the ways that the producers of the film showed their esteemed viewers that love is so strong and that true lovers hold their loved ones so close to their heart. Mathilde then hires a secret detective (Ticky Holgado) to unravel the mystery behind the where about of Manech. Through the hiring of the secret detective, Manech begins to get clues as to what actually happened to Manech on the battlefield (Audrey Tautou, Gaspard Ulliel & Ticky Holgado). There are actually some things that should be noted in the movie. Though, the film is a reproduction of the novel written by Sebastien Japrisot, there are some differences between the movie and the novel. In the movie, Mathilde and Manech are from Brittany, while it was written in the novel that they are from the Landes department of Southwest France. These discrepancies do not change the fact that the film was an excellent film as it is a must watch film for viewers that enjoy watching love films as the producers are sincere in their presentation.
