Social scientists and psychologists have stated that many students in the urban schools find it rough in their schools. As such, they believe that religion has influence on the schoolchildren. For example, urban schools are characterized with various hardships on the learners. In such a situation, the learners have to find a solution to the current situations and problems. One of the aspects of solving such a situation is through religious devotion (Jeynes, 2003). Therefore, to find a lasting solution to their problems, students tend to rely on religion. This helps many of the children in schools to excel in their academics. With devotion to religion, students also find it possible to have a better social life. With a healthy social life, the students will find the environment conducive to excellence. Therefore, the scientists have noted that the three aspects are required to enhance excellence. However, religion holds a priority, as it enhances the other two factors, which include academics and social life.
Social scientists state that religion is an aspect that assists students in various instances. For example, some disadvantaged students enhance their academic performance when they are enrolled in religious schools. However, this has been conflicted with some prevailing stereotypes. For example, it is stated that some religious students have a weakness in their studies. Since they have a weakness in their studies, they perform dismally in their academics. This stereotype has been prevailing to prove that students should concentrate on their academics, as opposed to devotion to religion (Jeynes, 2003). The second stereotype is that students who study in urban areas do not perform well in academics. This led to initiation of a study to disapprove the stereotypes. The study involved students who had a strong religious background. The studies noted that there is a positive correlation between academics and religion.
