Question 1

Some of you spoke about having one's needs met as a child. With the existence of needs comes the concept of impingements, which are road blocks to normal organic development and as a result, maladaptive relationship patterns and attachment styles then often result in the formation of unrealistic schemas in the individual. Therefore, someone who has fallen victim to chaotic, unstable, or abusive parenting will typically develop a negative world view that occurs comorbidly with a negative self view, referred to by Mahler as the internalized bad self.  In order to work on changing an individual's negative schemas and resulting maladaptive behavioral and relationship patterns, it would be a good idea for a clinician to establish trust with the client, while providing an empathic and genuine therapist/client relationship. Once this trust has been established, an empirically proven modality for relearning how to think, i.e. changing negative and dysfunctional thought patterns, would be to employ cognitive behavioral therapy which will allow for a slow cognitive change in the way the client views themselves and the world around them. As a result ego strength, self esteem, mood, etc., will improve over time. As a result, the client's behavior (including relationship patterns), will begin to change for the better.  Thoughts?
