Question 1 :  In 1976, Kai Erikson, a sociologist and son of groundbreaking psychologist, Erik Erikson, wrote a book entitled "Everything In Its Path."  He was sent by the federal government to study the effects on people of a disaster when a very badly constructed West Virginia lake for coal mining water residue broke its flimsy dam and flooded valleys and "hollers" wiping out towns in its "path."  His job was to evaluate the tragedy's  impact on the people and communities.  He discovered a lot about the Appalachian values and paradoxes in beliefs (look it up) in these devastated  communities.  

In her book, Cassie Chambers also does an outstanding analysis of Appalachian values and beliefs.  Unlike Erikson, she has lived them.  What values do you find in this chapter?  Give facts from the reading to support your analysis.  And, yes, find at least one paradox in the values and beliefs.

If you want an example of a paradox, here is one:  Many New Yorkers are moving to Florida to escape the extreme high taxes and indebted state for a "no-income-tax" state with a balanced budget. But, Floridians sometimes get upset when the northerners arrive and the first thing they want to do is start adding programs that will raise the taxes and indebtedness.
