Question: How has our difficulty in understanding and reading about science contributed to our lack of scientific understanding, and how can we begin to fix this problem?

Assignment: Use Carl Sagan’s “Can We Know the Universe? Reflections on a Grain of Salt” (p. 727) and Sherry Turkle's’ “How Computers Change the Way We Think” (p. 721), as well as another article of your choice and any other resources you deem necessary to compose an essay addressing this question.  Your essay must be a minimum of 1000 words, in MLA format, and include in-text citations and a properly formatted Works Cited page.

During the examination, you may use any resources you brought with you, including books, notes, your computer, your phone, etc.

You may collaborate with other people in the room, but you are responsible for writing your own essay, and anything copied from one person to another will result in both parties receiving a failing grade. Use your collaborator to bounce ideas off of and to proof read.

Other than questions about the question for this exam, you may not ask the instructor for help or feedback once the exam has begun.

Your essay will be graded on the following:

Does it contain a strong thesis statement?

Is that thesis statement sufficiently explored in the body of the essay?

Has the writer used ample evidence along with solid reasoning to bolster the argument of the thesis statement?

Does the argument develop throughout the course of the essay?

Does the essay transition smoothly from point to point?

Does the introduction grab the reader’s attention?

Does the conclusion actually draw conclusions about the argument of the thesis?

Are the MLA format, in-text citations, and Works Cited page all done properly?

Is the essay free from errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation?
