According to IHS iSuppli, a market research firm, annual sales of Internet-enabled devices, such as Apple’s iPad, will surpass 750 million units by 2015. This figure significantly exceeds the projected PC sales of 479.1 million.15 Revolutionized by the Apple iPad, tablet PCs are increasingly being used for a wide variety of tasks, even though they have not yet replaced laptops. There are many other tablets on the market as well, of course—Surface (Microsoft), Galaxy Tab (Samsung), Kindle Fire (Amazon), Optimus Pad (LG), Nexus 7 (Google), and XOOM (Motorola), to name a few.

Tablet computers work best as media players or e-book readers. Having used a standard keyboard on a laptop makes it difficult for some users to switch to touch screens; it is also difficult to switch from a standard mouse and keyboard. However, some tablets can be connected to external keyboards. In most cases, a tablet PC is more expensive than a laptop.

iPad users can employ a vast number of applications, many of which are free, by downloading them from the App Store. Non-Apple tablets use Android operating systems, and although apps are available for these tablets, there are not nearly as many of them.

Size, battery life, availability of productivity tools, hardware/software support, and connectivity are the key factors to consider when choosing between a tablet and a laptop, although the line between the two is becoming more and more blurred. A tablet is smaller, lighter, easier to carry, and faster to boot. An iPad’s battery life is about 10 hours, whereas a typical laptop has a battery life of about three hours. Laptops are used more as productivity tools for business functions, but with additional accessories, tablets can also perform those tasks. As for connectivity and systems support, there are plenty of peripheral devices for laptops, whereas the hard disk capacity of tablets is much smaller than for laptops. Also, there are more operating systems to choose from on a laptop than on a tablet.

Before deciding which way to go, you must clearly define your needs. If you need a device with lots of hardware and software support for business applications, programming, and gaming, then you should choose a laptop. If you are looking for an easy-to-use smart device with many apps and easy connectivity, then a tablet would be a more suitable choice.16
