Your post made me think of the statement you made, "One great challenge, and that is most of the firms are not willing to share the critical information."  This statement is very troubling to ready because it is counter productive.  It shows that organizations are guarded what information they are willing to share with their overseas competitors.  Some organizations believe that intellectual knowledge is being exploited by our Chinese trading partners and it must stop at all costs.  Working together with overseas organizations can still be achieved if both sides are vested in one another. Do you think the current U.S. trade policy toward China will create even more inefficiencies in the supply chain?

You make a valid point, when talking about how companies are not willing to share critical information. Some companies will share a little more than others, but in order to be totally successful. The more info you share, the more successful and productive it will be.  Many companies will share some information, but not what they consider to be companies proprietary info. Competition is what prevents people from sharing info, and the possibility of other companies gaining an edge, or becoming more successful within the market. In most cases, technology is the thing companies are not willing to share, openly, fearing failure. Therefore, until companies and the people within those companies, are more open to improving or making a successful system for everyone around the world, it will probably remain status quo.

Good Day Everyone,

This week we look at globally optimized operations for organizations.  Organizations have expanded their operations worldwide to take advantage of cheaper labor force, better tax incentives, market share, and various other beneficial incentives (Nagurney, 2010).  However, when running an organization globally, the operations of your supply chain must take into account variables that may or may not assist you.  As a supply chain manager it is imperative to understand how your organization's global operations work.  There are a few things you must consider and implement to run an efficient and cost effective global supply network.  First, focus on you core strengths and keep the core functions of your company in-house.  Functions that are not your core strengths, outsource to a third party vendor.  Second, as your organization has branched out to the global marketplace, you must improve you collaboration between you and the third party vendor.  Third, think globally but act locally. Ensure you understand and comprehend the uniqueness and limitations of the local market environment, labor force, cultural and daily operational flow.  Having your organization misunderstand or negate the importance will result in future inefficiencies.  Fourth, implement up to date, real time, measurable technology to asses your supply chain and operations globally.  Continued engagement and collaboration with your overseas supply chain network will ensure a smoother and much more efficient operation.  We must remember a key statement when we deal with global optimization of an organization (does your organization benefit from having their operations overseas).  Do you think U.S. based organizations have regrets in moving some of their operation to Mexico or China?  What might be a consideration supply chain managers must have to ensure a smooth global optimized operation in their  supply chain?

“Global optimization is sustained only by constant scanning and evaluation of partnership opportunities that can potentially change the network structure” (Poirier, Swink, Quinn, 2009). There are two types of optimization as it relates to the supply chain. There is local and global. When discussing optimization, it involves making supply chains streamlined and efficient while keep costs as low as possible. Supply chains are very complex and have to be fluid and need to be set up to compliment the businesses you partner with. Today’s  business environment has become very dynamic and challenging, it becomes imperative for companies to achieve sustainability while working alongside global trade partners and still meeting regulatory requirements. To have globally optimized operations, it is vital that companies have partners to collaborate with and everyone involved is part of the process to ensure the success of the supply chain. Companies also needs to invest highly in technology that will be beneficial to the process, after evaluating company goals and budget considerations for the purpose of improving the global logistics process. “As much as we tout collaboration and technology usage as a trait of greatness, we also acknowledge the difficulty of developing this capability” (Poirier, Swink, Quinn, 2009). It is also necessary that the personnel involved in the process stay up to date on current systems and technologies, to make informed decisions. It is necessary for the companies to set targets for achieving goals and also allocate time to implement the goals. How much do you think technology will play a role in global optimization in the future, and why?
