Whereas in the Old Testament God sends Jesus to usher in grace and eternal life, according to Romans 5:12-19.  This is where you can see the old and the New Testament merge into one act. It is man who brought damnation unto the world, and it is man of flesh who brings an abundance of grace and salvation.  Jesus duty of extinguishing the old ways of the old testament becomes evident when he forgives the sins of the paralyzed man, during these times it was not uncommon for an temple sacrifice to take place, the Pharisees were offended by this demonstration seeking to understand how a man could forgive sins, when it is only God himself that can forgive the sins of man during these times.  Later on, in the Old Testament you can see the prophets giving themselves over in word and deed, they are blessed by God.
