One of the main themes in the short story "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" by Flannery O'Connor, is good vs evil. The message the author is trying to convey with this theme is that you can not judge a person based on what you hear about them, and you can not judge a person based on how they appear. In the beginning of the story the grandmother was reading about a prison escapee named the misfit, and said "I wouldn't take my children in any direction with a man like that aloose in it" (O'Connor, p. 464). Then, as the story progresses the grandmother finds herself and her family at the mercy of this criminal and she says to the misfit "I know you're a good man. You don't look a bit like you have common blood. I know you must come from nice people!" (O'Connor, p.). From the beginning of the story to the end, the perspective of the misfit went from dangerous and someone you should beware of to someone who was looked at as a god man and one that would not shoot a lady. The message of good vs evil made me doubt my judgement of the misfit since in the beginning he was made out to seem dangerous and the grandmothers interpretation convinced me he was evil, but once we met the misfit he was proper and polite, with good conversation skills. The theme chosen made the story more effective that way so that the reader could make up their own mind on the misfit before the story ends. (Spoiler alert: the misfit kills the grandmother, and his two helpers kill the rest of the family).

“A Worn Path” by Welty presents a major theme of duty and responsibility. The major character or protagonist Jackson Phoenix is motivated by the sense of responsibility for her ill grandson that is ill. Jackson shows this by overcoming many obstacles on her journey to the town nurse to obtain the medicine needed for the grandsons pain. This type of selflessness makes her dutymore motivated by true love than responsibility. Phoenix Jackson also presents not only determination but she also has a since of fearless with in her . “Why, that’s too far! That’s as far as I walk when I come out myself, and I get something for my trouble.” “Now you go on home, Granny!”Then, Jackson replies “ I bound to go to town, mister,” “The time come around”.I would suggest that this story is more avidly interesting with the theme and more interesting to read knowing the theme and how it is presented throughout the story.
