The use of performance-based assessments is for the purposes of students being able to perform the task rather than selecting the answer from a list. Basically, this means the student must put in work to get the answer they are looking for. “It is concluded that performance assessments can be used as a diagnostic tool for monitoring students’ skill performance as well as to support teachers in evaluating and improving their science lessons” (Kruit, Oostdam & Van den Berg, et al).
When looking at how this can be used in the classroom, an example would be the student performing a research by doing a science project. This requires hands on and the student to put forth the effort to research to get the required answer. We can even see this when solving math problems.
In my final project the focus is first grade students. In this final project the type of assessment that I plan to use is Whole group Activity that require each student to answer all the questions on the retell wheel such as What’s the Title? Who are the main characters? As well as who is the Author? If students are not able to answer the question the student will continue until all questions have been answered correctly. The idea of this design project is to focus on the central message & characters of the story The Pigs, the Wolf and the Mud.
I think that this will be a good for the students because it requires them to use their comprehension to gain knowledge and understanding of the actual story. “They require students to actively demonstrate what they know, performance assessments may be a more valid indicator of students' knowledge and abilities” (Consumer Guide, n.d.). There is a big difference between answering multiple choice questions on how to make an oral presentation and making an oral presentation.
