This is the question they had to answer.

Ask three people at your workplace what, in their opinions, are the three biggest issues in workplace ethics and why they hold that opinion. Report their rank in the organization and your findings.

Classmate 1

I am currently pursuing a career in real estate and while I am not yet an agent I have accepted a position at NuWay realty effective as soon as my license arrives. The world of Real Estate consists of not only realtors but also attorneys, brokers, appraisers, inspectors and mortgage lenders to name a few. I have asked my broker, a loan specialist, and a senior loan advisor this question presented in the prompt. It will be hard to rank these people as they are all necessary to completing a contract on a sale or purchase of real estate.

The Broker's response:

"1. Taking advantage of a client or another agent for the agent’s personal gain. With there being so many real estate agents, there are laws that are against this kind of behavior but it’s hard to actually control. It happens a lot more than it should. 2. Accounting. Again, there are a lot of agents and all of them are filing tax returns as independent contractors and there is more ability to evade taxes."

The Loan Specialist's response:

"Confidentiality is an issue that challenges the ethical integrity of our office due to the extent to which a large number of people have access to applicants’ personal and private information- without a valid business reason for access to this information."

The Senior Loan Officer's response:

"The privacy practices (such as sending unsecured emails, texting personal identifying information, and writing credit card numbers on paper) are serious issues that compromise the ethics of our mortgage office."

After hearing the responses from these three people in my working community, it seems as if they all have the clients best interest in mind when revealing the ethical dilemmas they believe can happen within the Real Estate communities. Clients are trusting these three individuals with highly important information. Because these issues are recognized, it will be easier to avoid these practices for these individuals.

My first colleague expressed her concern for the lack of respect exhibited by members of management, as well as by her fellow co-workers.  Procedural questions have not been addressed and new ideas are routinely dismissed.  She also voiced displeasure with the lack of confidentiality and privacy rules regarding customers’ information.  She also is disturbed by the level of inconsistency exhibited throughout the organization.  All of the employees are not on the same accord regarding procedures and the dissemination of information.  She is not a member of management.

My second colleague has not been pleased with the organization’s stance on diversity in the workplace.  Negative comments have been made regarding an employee’s sexual orientation.  He also voiced displeasure with the organization’s on-going infrastructure woes.  He also expressed concern for the level of inconsistency regarding employees’ behavior toward the handling of customers’ information.  He is not a member of management.

My third colleague echoed the sentiment regarding diversity.  Older employees seem to be targeted by their co-workers.  He is disturbed by the level of disrespect shown by younger employees.  He is also concerned about the lack of consistency regarding procedures and the handling of customers’ information.  He is not a member of management.

It appears that the biggest issue in workplace ethics for all three of my colleagues was inconsistencies regarding procedures and information management.  Business ethics requires an understanding of your organization’s operation coupled with an understanding of what you should do from a Christian perspective (Ruddell, 2014).  If your organization does not provide their employees with universal training, or any training, then the employees cannot be expected to know that they have violated a standard (Ruddell, 2014).  “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin” (Holy Bible, KJV, James 4:17).
