Mentoring tends to follow along with a more informal process that may last longer between a more experienced individual and a newer one. While coaching is a shorter-term formal process. Mentoring provides guidance and support to the mentee; coaching uses feedback to support strengths and improve weaknesses. Both may be used in career development. In my current position, I am experiencing a sense of mentorship from a few individuals from higher ranks. The executive vice president takes time out of their schedule every couple of weeks to teach me about certain processes that are required for me to do in my new position. A couple of the project managers have invited me to sit with them so I may learn directly from the different aspects of project management that may be best learned through firsthand experience. Part of the culture in my company involves mentorship like qualities where higher ranked employees want to guide lower employees because it will benefit the organization in the long run.
