What is Multicultural Education?

“Multicultural Education is an essential element of school reform” (Bode & Nieto, 2019). Within the educational system there is much diversity based on the different backgrounds. There are seven characteristics that really analyze multicultural education. Being able to offer students such a diversity when it comes to the academics and activities, I believe just really provide the students with change. The educational supports all kinds of backgrounds and come to the levels of which the students are. I work in the educational system where our County implemented Hispanic Heritage Culture week a few years ago. This event was to highlight important individuals from this culture just as we celebrate African-American History Month. I think our students should be aware of the diverse culture in which we live in and if we can begin to implement that within the educational system, we can begin to see unity within.

Does it benefit the students? Why or Why not?

It absolutely benefits the students because it allows them to identify with the language, culture and broader aspects, power and privilege that revolve around affirmation. I believe that this can help transform our students with making those connections about other cultural backgrounds. I honestly think it can help illuminate the cycles of racism that still seem to exist today. Bode & Nieto (2019) states that “helping students get along, teaching them to feel better about themselves, and sensitizing them to one another are worthy goals of good educational practice, including multicultural education.”
