For many students with disabilities, the key to success in the classroom lies in having appropriate adaptations, accommodations, and modifications made to the instruction and other classroom activities. Some adaptations are as simple as moving a distractible student to the front of the class or away from the pencil sharpener or the window. Other modifications may involve changing the way that material is presented or the way that students respond to show their learning. Adaptations, accommodations, and modifications need to be individualized for students, based upon their needs and their learning styles and interests. It is not always obvious what adaptations, accommodations, or modifications would be beneficial for a particular student, or how changes to the curriculum, its presentation, the classroom setting, or student evaluation might be made. For example, a student who has an autism spectrum disorder I will place a picture card schedule around the classroom, this will help with creating a pattern of consistency.

Teachers are often asked to modify instruction to accommodate special needs students. In fact, all students will benefit from the following good teaching practices. If a student is having difficulty learning because of special needs, then before each lesson the teacher should pre-teach the difficult parts of each lesson every morning. This will help not only the student with special needs, but the whole class will benefit from this. The teacher should also provide a study guide as well as worksheets. During the lesson, the teacher can use a visual board and flashcards for the class. The teacher should provide written as well as oral instructions.
