There is certainly a connection between reading and writing. The better a student can read increases their writing abilities, and the better a student can write demonstrates their background knowledge of what they read. Both goes hand and hand. I think one of the greatest barriers to reading and writing is student engagement. Reading is more than pronouncing words, but understanding the meaning and interpretation of what they are reading. When students are not engaged, they fail to grasp the meaning and interpretation. One way to overcome this is to find a way to relate the reading to something interesting that the students can relate to, and then have the student to write about it in their own words.
