One reason for teaching reading comprehension strategies is to prepare students for college and careers. Also, common core requires students to apply reading comprehension in the different content areas. Reading strategies help students to gain a better understanding of more complex subjects. In the middle and high schools grades, teachers can build the students vocabulary to help them understand the more complex subject areas. Graphic organizers are a great tool to use after the students have completed a reading assignment. This is the beginning process of writing about what they have read.
