Rhetorical situation for an advertisement

Step 1:

Locate an advertisement (either print or video). This could be a commercial on TV or Hulu, or it could be in a magazine.

Step 2:

Upload a Word document to this assignment in which you analyze the advertisement for the following aspects of the rhetorical situation: writer, purpose, audience, and context.

  • Writer: Describe the person/business behind the ad. What is her/his/its characteristics.? In other words, what is the business known for or associated with? Look at the list of characteristics on the top of p. 10 for more ideas.
  • Purpose: Ultimately, we could say that most ads from businesses have the purpose of selling a product or making money, but this a generalization. Specifically, the advertisement will likely have another purpose as part of that agenda. What is the advertisement trying to convey or get people to think about in relation to certain product?
  • Audience: Who is being targeted by this ad? Think about the type of audience who would be reading or watching the magazine or program. What are the characteristics of this audience?
  • Context:  When did you first encounter the ad? Where did you encounter the ad? What media and technology were you using? Have you encountered this ad anywhere else?

Also, explain how any of the following types persuasion is being used in the advertisement: logos, ethos, or pathos.
