Roger Williams and Religious Freedom

Throughout his life, Roger Williams, was a passionate advocate of religious freedom and “Soul Liberties.” Williams was staunchly against forced religious conversion, and argued that forced worship “stinks in God’s nostrils”. Using the analogy of a ship, Williams argued in a “Letter to the Town of Providence” (1655) that none f the papists, protestants, Jews, or Turks be forced to come to the ship’s prayer of worship, nor compelled from their own particular prayer or worship, if they practice any. In light of Williams’s plea, ESSAYS could address how Williams established Rhode Island as a haven for religious dissenters, and his quest to live equability with people of different religious denominations.
