1. Section 2.1- Simon Bolivar: Simon Bolivar was known as the George Washington of Latin America. He was known as the "liberator" and worked to free South America from Spain. Bolivar was successful and free many nations including Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador. Review Bolivar's letter on the government in Latin America in our textbook on page 575. Discuss how Bolivar felt that the political and social circumstances were different than those in the United States. Why did he feel that Latin America had such a unique situation? What problems did he anticipate for the future?

2. Section 2.2 - Modernism and the Rise of Mass Society: After the Industrial Revolution, a new "mass society" began to emerge as more had access to education, transportation, and opportunity. Out of this arose a new change in class structure and a new cultural revolution as the upper class no longer set society standards. This change in societal structure would bring progress and also a concern as many struggled to adjust. There were several individuals that emerged from this and would have a major impact on society including Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud, and Albert Einstein. Review the learning materials and textbook to discuss what type of an impact one of these individuals had on this era. Consider not only their specific contribution but how they may have shaped thinking during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
