Select a Research Question for Project TwoWRITING TEMPLATE

Research Question: Are there differences in the average agreement with gay individuals having the right to marry one another among people who were interviewed in different geographic regions of the United States?

Personal or Professional Reasons:

This topic peaked my interest because the debate over same-sex marriage has long stirred strong feelings and strong political opposition. It's intriguing how such contrasts can arise from a person's upbringing and place of residence. Many of these ideas, in my opinion, are a result of my upbringing in a variety of backgrounds, faiths, beliefs, and value systems. It would be interesting to see how the data might offer a lot of insight into same-sex couples when potentially choosing a region to reside. There is a lot of prejudice that could be investigated in terms of this subject.

Social Relevance:

This topic will always have some social relevance since although now federally same-sex marriage is legal in all 50 states, it is still illegal in 13 states due to the enactment of, The Defense of Marriage Act, signed in 1996, which defined marriage by the federal government as between a man and woman. It is because of this that states have been able to deny marriage equality. Although there is a federal mandate in place, it does assert that no state can be forced to acknowledge same-sex marriages performed in other states. Some states believe that a union between a man and a woman is the best path to raising a healthy family. Many hope that in the future all gays and lesbians, regardless of region, will have the right to marry against those who believe that same sex marriage is undermining the traditional foundation of what they consider a healthy family structure consists of in a heterosexual marriage (Pew Research Center, 2012).
