Senior capstone week 1
week 1
The Capstone Project Requirement
In this course, you will be working every week on a project which showcases the knowledge and skills you have gained while in the Information Systems program. We will be looking to see that you demonstrate all the outcomes of the program. At the end of the course, you will submit a project paper, do a video presentation AND demonstration, and submit all documentation associated with your project (files, databases, etc.). The project completed in this course should be of such quality that you could show the work to a future employer or client.
This week there are two issues to consider:
You will choose a software development, database, web design, or networking project based on the criteria noted below. The project should solve a real world problem. There are many ways in which you can come up with an idea for a project. For instance, you can reach out to a non-profit organization to see if they have an information systems problem which they need solving. You may also identify a project at your place of employment. It is imperative, however, that you do the work by yourself.
Throughout the project, you will implement the typical systems analysis and design steps. In week 1, you will submit your proposal for approval by the instructor and the College of Engineering and Computer Science. In weeks 2 through 5, you will develop the project idea and do the design, development, and implementation. In week 6, you will do testing of your implemented project. In week 7, you will finalize your project, make any improvements which resulted from the test phase, and develop a plan for delivery and maintenance of the system. Your paper, presentation, and demonstration will conclude the course in week 8. Throughout the project, you will need to consider the ethical, legal, social, professional, and local and global issues surrounding your project.
This week, you need to come up with a project proposal using the provided template. All proposals must include the following:
- A description of the problem. Explain why the project is necessary. A discussion of the current workflow.
- An analysis of alternative solutions.
- A description of the proposed solution and how it impacts the workflow.
- Identification of the project stakeholders.
- A definition of the scope of the project that will be addressed in the next seven weeks.
- Determine a timeline and budget for your Capstone project.
Based on the course requirements for this program, you may create one of the following projects.
- Software Applicattion
A software application project will include, among other things, the following activities:
- Creating a software application for a real world problem employing one of the following programming languages. Keep in mind that the rigor should display a skill level which you would be comfortable showing a potential employer.
- Java
- C/C++
- Visual Basic
- C#
- Python
- Collecting the system requirements and outlining the Use Case descriptions and UML diagrams.
- Designing the system using one or more UML diagrams besides the one used for Use Cases.
- Determining a test case(s) that will appraise the accuracy, performance, and security of the system.
- Website
A website project will include, among other things, the following activities:
- Creating of a website which implements all of the following:
- HTML/CSS
- JavaScript or jQuery scripts
- A database
- Creating a wire-frame design of the Website
- Creating a diagram of the system.
- Determining test cases that will appraise the accuracy, performance, and security of the system.
- Database
A database project will include, among other things, the following activities:
- Constructing a database system using SQL statements that has
- At least three or more tables linked together by keys
- A trigger or stored procedure of the system
- A Graphical User Interface to demonstrate the system.
- Explaining the database design using UML diagrams.
- Determining a test case(s) that will appraise the accuracy of the system.
- Network Management System Implementation
A networking project will include, among other things, the following activities:
- Designing and implementing a secure network system
- Describing Product implementation
- Outlining the required hardware and software
- Explaining the network design in writing and UML diagrams.
- Discussing the system configuration(s)
- Explaining the installation process
- User level
- Database level
- Business rule level
- Describing the Utility Analysis to monitor the system
- Describing the User Authentication design
Capstone Proposal Memo
Welcome to the final course in your Information Systems program! In this course, you will demonstrate the knowledge you obtained from the program. This course requires you to propose a real life problem and suggest an information technology solution to the problem. The way you will submit the proposed information technology solution will be in the form of a proposal memo. You will address the proposal letter to the professor of the IS498 class.
The proposal letter will be in memo form. Use the proposal memo template provided. Save the proposal memo file with the following name, YourNameIS498PM.doc (As indicated it should be a Microsoft Office document). On the pages below is an example of the Capstone Proposal.
