Several open source and commercially available vulnerability scanners and audit assessment tools exist. For your discussion posting this week, I want you to identify 3 vulnerability scanners, explain how they work, what they do, and what they report out, and how these tools could and would be used and by whom in an organization. Please include any limitations with the tool (IP range scanning in the free version, only runs on a certain OS, etc.). For the purpose of this discussion, I will also allow the inclusion of penetration testing tools.

In addition to the above research, I would like all of you to download Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MSBA) (last stable release was on 9 Jan 2015). Scan your computer with the tool and report back on a few interesting things it found. Linux/Mac users - you are welcome to identify and use a different tool of your choosing that serves a similar function to MSBA.

One of the vulnerability scanners is callled Nikto2, Which is an open source vulnerability scanning software that looks for vunerabilities in web applications. Nikdto2 has a database of 6700 dangeorous files which it can scan the web servers for and find vulnerabilities realted to servers that are not upto date, or have configurations that are not the most secure and can perform scans in a short period of time. Nikto2 does not protect against any of the vulnerabilites and merely provides alerts when something is a miss. 

Another vunerability scanner is Netsparker which is also primarliy used in web applications and it finds vulnerabilities automatically and scan thousands of web apps in just few hours looking vulnerabilities. this sanner has the feature to crawl into web apps in order to find vulnerabilities and it can offer and explain some ways to eliminate the vulnerabities that it has found. 

Another vulnerablitiy scanner is called Nmap which is a very popoulr free and open source network scanning tools that is used by many security experts. Nmap probes networks looking for hosts with vulnerabilities and operating systems which can be exploited.
