READ DIRECTIONS
Collecting valid data is an art unto itself. Ensuring that your results are valid and unbiased is a skill beyond the scope of this module. However, even quality data can be corrupted by human error and inattention to detail. Some of the most common data errors include:
· Data that are not read properly
· Dates are interpreted improperly
· Hidden characters that result in improper fields (such as a tab character in a field that looks blank but causes SPSS to classify the field as a "string")
· SPSS auto-assigning incorrect levels of measurement
· Data that are out of range
· Impossible categories
· Calculating a nonsensical mean (if 1 = blonde, 2 = brunette, 3 = red hair, 4 = black hair, etc., then a mean hair color of 3.1 provides no useful information)
· Lower- and upper-case letters used interchangeably (such as "f" and "F" for sex)
· Inconsistency of measurement and coding
n order to submit a table of corrected data that shows you did your corrections in SPSS and not in some other program like excel is to submit one of two work products:
1) An SPSS data table using File->Print function, and then exporting the result into word using the methods I posted in the announcements today.
2) Taking a screenshot in dataview.
All other tables could easily be generated in a program other than SPSS so they do not demonstrate the competencies required for full credit of the assignment.
Since we did not cover the methods on how to use the file->print function in the course, the only method that can I can fairly ask the class for, because it is the one we have already covered in the course, is the screenshot method.
If you chose to use option 1 and chose to create an SPSS data table using the file->print function, you must be sure the tables are in APA format and that the table does not run off the page or over the required 1" margins expected in APA format. The handout and video I posted should help you with that formatting.
FOR EXAMPLE: MUST BE A TABLE WITH ONLY ROWS 12-17 WHICH IS ATTACHED
AND GIVE EXPLANATION FOR ERRORS
THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE BELOW
1). Original datasets with Errors - (Rows 7 - 11)
2). The table below contains the list of errors found. Explanation of the errors for each cell is documented in each cell
