SRR stands for Summarize, Respond, and Reflect. After reading the passage carefully, noting key
points/arguments, etc. compose a one-page (~300 to 400 word) paper divided into three distinct
paragraphs, as follows:
a) Summarize: the first paragraph succinctly summarizes the passage, focusing on what you
understand to be the key points that the author is making.
b) Respond: one paragraph in which you respond to the reading (i.e., agreeing or disagreeing with
the author on one or more points; suggesting points that the author might have under- or over-
emphasized; etc.)
c) Reflect: one paragraph in which you describe your personal response to the passage. Consider for
instance how this passage has affected your own life or educational perspective.
The initial paragraph is often the longest and contains much detail, whereas the second paragraph
often requires more thought and reflection. The final paragraph concludes your examination of the
material with a personal note.
