National Advantage

posted by Andrew

National advantage is an interesting topic in this chapter. I think most of us would agree the United States generally has a positive national advantage. The text explains that the four determinants of national average are "factors of production, demand conditions, firm/strategy/structure/rivalry, and related and supporting industries" (Hitt, Ireland, and Hoskisson, 2015, p. 234). The factors of production can include things like labor, land, natural resources, capital and infrastructure, all of which the United States has as a strength. Demand conditions are exactly what they sound like; how much demand the domestic market has for a product. Supporting industries is an important consideration as well. If the United States is a big-time car manufacturer, but does not manufacture any of the component parts, there would not be a national advantage in the context of supporting industries. The final component, firm strategy/structure/rivalry can vary greatly from country to country. There is strong rivalry in the United States among many different industries
