Studies have shown providing health information is a necessary but not a sufficient condition to promote positive behavioral or lifestyle changes. Many theories explain why people can or cannot adopt healthy behavior. Your Team's challenge is to assist the minority individual depicted in the scenario (located on the next slide) in altering the approach to a balanced and healthy living.

In Part 1, you will select a Middle Range Theory (Successful aging theory within the elderly population) and guided by this theory, your task will be to suggest strategies to promote an individual’s healthy behaviors.

The Scenario

You, as the advanced practice nurse (APN), have worked with this minority population (identify your approved minority population) for ten years. 

Over the years, you have volunteered to organize health fairs and health help sessions.  You regularly post health information on central bulletin boards and support screening programs for many illnesses germane to this population (identify what this population is at risk for). In spite of all your efforts, this select minority population still continues to engage in risky and dangerous behaviors. 

For instance, some African Americans tend to smoke, drink, and eat excessively and exercise minimally putting them at risk for HTN, CVA or MI. Some Latinos/ Hispanics consume a lot of carbohydrates inherent in their diet, little exercise, and put themselves at risk for obesity or diabetes. (Think of other at risk behaviors for other minority populations.) 

Remember, your task will be to suggest strategies to promote an individual’s healthy behaviors!
