How to Do the SPI Assignment

After you complete the SPA quizzes, then write a paper interpreting the summary statistics (mean, percent of indicators reported, and weighted mean) in the bottom rows of the SPA Data worksheet.

  • Read again each companyâs sustainability report to deepen your understanding of their sustainability performance.
  • Review the SPA Data fileâs summary statistics: A) mean (represents sustainability performance), B) percent of indicators reported (represents transparency), and C) weighted mean (represents transparent performance).
  • Do an intra-firm (within) comparative analysis.
    • How did each company perform in terms of human rights, labor practices, product responsibility, and society performance (mean)? Did the company have higher (or lower) human rights performance compared to labor practices, product responsibility, and society performance? Higher (or lower) labor practices performance compared to product responsibility and society performance? Higher (or lower) product responsibility performance compared to society performance?
    • How transparent (percent of indicators reported) was each company in terms of human rights, labor practices, product responsibility, and society reporting? Did the company have higher (or lower) human rights transparency compared to labor practices, product responsibility, and society transparency? Higher (or lower) labor practices transparency compared to product responsibility and society transparency? Higher (or lower) product responsibility transparency compared to society transparency?
    • How did each company do in terms of human rights, labor practices, product responsibility, and society transparent performance (weighted mean)? Did the company have higher (or lower) human rights transparent performance compared to labor practices, product responsibility, and society transparent performance? Did the company have higher (or lower) labor practices transparent performance compared to product responsibility and society transparent performance? Did the company have higher (or lower) product responsibility transparent performance compared to society transparent performance?
  • Do an inter-firm (among) comparative analysis.
    • Did AMD have higher (or lower) human rights performance compared Fluor and Intel? Higher (or lower) labor practices performance compared Fluor and Intel? Higher (or lower) product responsibility performance compared Fluor and Intel? Higher (or lower) society performance compared Fluor and Intel?
    • Did AMD have higher (or lower) human rights transparency compared Fluor and Intel? Higher (or lower) labor practices transparency compared Fluor and Intel? Higher (or lower) product responsibility transparency compared Fluor and Intel? Higher (or lower) society transparency compared Fluor and Intel?
    • Did AMD have higher (or lower) human rights transparent performance compared Fluor and Intel? Higher (or lower) labor practices transparent performance compared Fluor and Intel? Higher (or lower) product responsibility transparent performance compared Fluor and Intel? Higher (or lower) society transparent performance compared Fluor and Intel?
  • Then comparatively rank the case study companies overall, from highest to lowest.
  • Write a paper describing your interpretation findings. A) Organize your paper according to the grading rubric using the organizing template (next page). B) Write a comprehensive and thorough interpretative paper. Provide examples from the sustainability reports, and compare the companies in terms of their summary descriptive statistics in the SPA Data Answer file provided by Dr. Paun after the last SPA quiz. C) Proofread to check spelling, grammar, clarity, and check to make sure that your paper answers all of the grading rubric questions, is not above or too far below the page limitation (see below), and that you have not pasted text from online documents or those written by others.
  • Note that Turnitin will be used to check the SPI paper assignment for plagiarism.
  • Maximum paper length is 8 pages and should be single spaced, .5 inch page margins, with your choice of font type/size. If you want to include citations, figures, or tables, then put those in an appendix (which will not count in the page total). Note that citations, footnotes, figures, and tables are not required. Your paper must be uploaded on Canvas on or before the due date and time. If a student uploads a corrupt file that we cannot open or read, then they will receive 0 points. To ensure you have uploaded a readable file, download the file you uploaded to the course website and open it to review.

Organizing Template

Organizing your paper so that it follows the grading rubric is good insurance for covering all items that will be graded. Below is a template with suggested section headers in your paper.

  • Intra-firm Comparison of Human Rights, Labor Practices, Product Responsibility, and Society Performance, Transparency, and Transparent Performance: AMD
  • Intra-firm Comparison of Human Rights, Labor Practices, Product Responsibility, and Society Performance, Transparency, and Transparent Performance: Fluor
  • Intra-firm Comparison of Human Rights, Labor Practices, Product Responsibility, and Society Performance, Transparency, and Transparent Performance: Intel
  • Inter-firm Comparison of Human Rights Performance, Transparency, and Transparent Performance Among All Case Study Companies
  • Inter-firm Comparison of Labor Practices Performance, Transparency, and Transparent Performance Among All Case Study Companies
  • Inter-firm Comparison of Product Responsibility Performance, Transparency, and Transparent Performance Among All Case Companies
  • Inter-firm Comparison of Society Performance, Transparency, and Transparent Performance Among All Case Study Companies
  • Overall comparative rank of the case study companies.
