T.E.X.A.S style paragraph

USE THIS LINK (Caffeine Chapter of Michael Pollan This is Your Mind on Plants.pdf) to answer the question below: In at least 200-250 words, answer one of the discussion questions in a T.E.X.A.S. style paragraph. In the analysis section of your paragraph, analyze the quote you′ve chosen for pathos. I HAVE CHOSEN Pathos !!! Be sure to integrate a quote from the assigned text for this discussion. Choose one of the aspects of rhetoric he used and analyze it more deeply. For the claim in your topic sentence, answer the following: Was his use of the aspect of rhetoric you chose effective in conveying his argument? Why or why not? As you explain your reasoning, remember that all of the literary devices we practiced earlier in the semester (e.g. tone, diction, connotation, denotation, and mood) are still fair game, if they connect to the aspect of rhetoric you chose, and they′re great ways to add depth to your analysis section. Tip: In order to answer the discussion question, you need to take a moment before you begin writing to determine what his central message in the chapter is. One easier way to do so is to describe the chapter to someone who hasn′t read it. As you do so, you can describe his evidence and why he shares it with us. This pre-writing will help you focus your ideas later.

ANSWER

T.E.X.A.S Style Paragraph: Caffeine Chapter of Michael Pollan's This is Your Mind on Plants

Michael Pollan uses pathos effectively to explore the emotional experiences associated with the consumption of caffeine in his chapter “Caffeine.” Essentially, this author engages the audience’s emotions throughout the chapter by using pathos across the chapter to express the emotional connections and challenges related to caffeine, making the message resounding. For example, Pollan asserts that “That reconsolidation of self- daily sharpening of the mental pencil- too much longer than usual and never quite felt complete (Pollan 96). This quote appeals to the audience's emotions by showing the effects of the invisible addiction associated with caffeine, leading the readers to sympathize with the author due to his emotional difficulties related to caffeine withdrawal. Based on this expression and the author’s choice of words, caffeine consumption is associated with adverse psychological effects that may lower an individual’s quality of life. Phrases such as “too much longer than usual” and “never quite felt complete” create a sense of empathy by pointing out the struggle initiated by caffeine addiction. In this regard, the author has used pathos successfully as his choice of words initiates sympathy for the individuals struggling with the adverse effects of caffeine.  The techniques engage the readers’ emotions throughout the chapter and make the message relatable and resonant.  Generally, Pollan has succeeded in the use of pathos by being passionate about the topic, making deliberate word choices, and applying expressions that evoke emotions and connect with the audience.
