Is it fair to say that the overall stress associated with the wars, assassinations, political scandals and racism simply wore a good portion of the public out so to speak? In other words, the collective psyche of the nation (or at least a good part of it) decided, perhaps even somewhat unconsciously, to unplug from the maelstrom of revolutionary change and social unrest and focus instead upon themselves?
