  • evaluate the culture and structure of an organization to recommend and implement improvements that support its vision, success, and sustainability
  • Collaborate in teams utilizing effective communication techniques
  • Integrate and apply analytical principles and skills to make strategic decisions

This project is the last of three group projects.  Members of the team will collaborate acting as a self-managed team.  As a self-managed team, members take a collective responsibility for ensuring the team operates effectively, sets team goals, manages time, makes decisions and solve problems, communicates frequently and clearly, and meets the deadline.   You may have team members that are located all over the world.  Working in a virtual environment should not stop the self-managed team from being successful in reaching the final goal. All work must appear in the Group area.

As a self-managed team, the following is the work for which team members are responsible:

  • setting goals
  • determining roles and responsibilities for each team member
  • actively participating and communicating in the Group area of the classroom
  • completing the agreed upon work prior to the deadline
  • resolving problems and issues among the team members
  • agreeing on a final product as a group (consensus decision making)
  • submitting the final product into the Assignment Folder (all students will submit into the Assignment Folder)

Team member should continue to set goals, determine the roles and responsibilities of each team member, determine a schedule for communication, set deadlines (do not set the deadline for the last day), and any other needed schedule to complete the task.

All students on the team will receive the same grade unless a member fails to participate or does not carry his or her weight in completing the project.  These students will receive a zero or a reduced grade depending on the level of participation and contribution to the team project.

Teams can consists of 2, 3 or 4 students but should not consists of more than four students.  Team members are responsible for completing the project even if a team member does not fulfill his or her obligation of submitting the agreed upon work.  The project cannot be completed individually and students cannot choose to create teams other than those created by the instructor.  If a team member does not hear from any other member, it is important to reach out to the instructor.

If the project is submitted after the due date, the Late Assignment policy is applicable.  No extensions beyond the due date is given to teams.

Instructions:

Step 1:  The Graphic (Forest and Trees)

Your group will create a video, using the picture of the forest and trees to discuss the relationship between organizational structure and culture, and the leader’s role in aligning strategy, organizational structure, and culture.

Step 2: Address the Following Elements

Each team member will answer the following questions and then as a team discuss the responses.  You will then come to a consensus as to what information will be used to create the video.

Use the graphic presented in Step 1 to answer the following questions.

  • Identify whether the forest represents the organizational structure or organizational culture, and explain why;
  • Identify whether the trees represent the organizational structure or organizational culture, and explain why;
  • Discuss the relationship between the forest and the trees in terms of organizational structure and organizational culture.  Explain whether one can exist without the other.  Explain why or why not.
  • Explain the role of the leader in aligning strategy, organizational culture and organizational structure.

Step 3:  Create the Transcript

Although the team will be creating a video, it is best to create the transcript first since the presenter of the video will be speaking from the transcript and it is not a good idea for the presenter to talk off the cuff.

The transcript addresses the elements in Step 2.  The responses should be well crafted and addressed clearly and concisely.  This is especially important since the video cannot be more than a few minutes.  Stay focused! do not add extraneous information making sure the pitch and tone of the presentation is appropriate for a business presentation.

The transcript must match the video except it will contain the support for your reasoning and conclusions and include in-text citations and a reference list.  Although you will not be providing in-text citations in the verbal presentation, it is appropriate to use phrases such as, “According to…” and “Argyris stated…”  Doing so will bring validity to your reasoning and conclusions.

It is important to give credit to those members of your team who participated in the creation of the video.

The following items are required in creating the transcript:

  • The names of the team members who participated in the project should be listed on the title page;
  • Use the grading rubric while completing the project to ensure all requirements are met that will lead to the highest possible grade.
  • Third person writing is required.  Third person means that there are no words such as “I, me, my, we, or us” (first person writing), nor is there use of “you or your” (second person writing).
  • Contractions are not used in business writing, so do not use them.
  • Do not use direct quotations.  Instead, you will paraphrase.  What this means is that you will put the ideas of an author or article into your own words rather than lifting directly from a source document.  You may not use more than four consecutive words from a source document, as doing so would require direct quotation marks.  Changing words from a passage does not exclude the passage from having quotation marks.
  • Use in-text citations and provide a reference list that contains the reference associated with each in-text citation.
  • Provide the page or paragraph number in every in-text citation presented.
  • You may not use books in completing this project.

Step 4: Create the Video

One member of the team must create the video.  If you are in a hybrid class, your team may elect to have more than one team member create and present the video.  The video presentation is part of the grade so make sure the presenter clearly and concisely communicates a response to this challenge.

Your team may elect to use prompts such as a white board to illustrate the forest and trees in order to discuss the different questions.  However doing so is optional.

As long as you are able to present a professional appearing video, it does not matter what program is used to create the video.  Avoid using a cell phone.

Step 5:  Submit the Video in the Assignment Folder

Submitting the project to the Assignment Folder will be considered the team’s final product and therefore ready for grading by the instructor.  It is incumbent every the student to verify the assignment is the correct submission.  No exceptions will be considered by the instructor).

You are not being grading on the length of the presentation, but the video should be not be more than a couple of minutes.  It may be necessary to create the video and provide a link in the assignment folder to the video due to size limitations.  Only one submission in the Assignment Folder is required.
