The chapter states that there are 2 methods to solve linear systems: 1) by substitution and 2) by addition/elimination. Both methods include solving for one equation, eliminating a variable and substituting the value found in one of the given equations. The difference is that the substitution method requires you to solve one of the equations for one variable first and then substitute that expression with the other equation. Whereas, the addition method requires you to eliminate the variables by making the sum one of the coefficients 0 first, add the two equations next and then solve the equation for one variable.
