The final paper is an ethnographic essay through which you argue for an interpretation of your own original data from your Catholic School fieldwork observations over the course of the class. The paper should focus on How does Catholic school supports children so efficiently? that appears significant for understanding the religious practices (mass) of the communities you studied.

Tip: A great deal of the clarity and persuasive power of an essay depends upon the author’s ability to prepare his/her readers for the argument they are about to read. All arguments

are essentially stories. The better a writer can frame the story that the reader is about

to encounter, the more powerful the telling.

1. Your paper must have a thesis statement. Explicitly state and underline your thesis

statement.

2. Everything following your thesis statement and motivating question.

3. Your paper must clearly deal with a topic that relates to our course.

4. The paper gives a general description of the field site, including the activity/activities the ethnographer witnessed, and roughly how much time the ethnographer spent.

5. The ethnographic essay should be 8-12 pages in length. (Including Introduction and

Conclusion.)

6. You must properly integrate several lines from at least three of the texts we have read

in class. (Pagis, Goulet, & Luhrmann)

7. You must also properly integrate several lines from at least three of the sources within

your own sources. (Any)

8. You’ll work with 3-4 sources from the class and 2-3 academic sources you find on your own (A total of 6 minimum citations).

9. Your research paper is due on Saturday, August 4th.
