The first article I chose was about Uber under investigation for gender discrimination. The EEOC are currently interviewing former and current employees as well as reviewing internal documents. Uber says it has done several things to try to address gender inequality such as a market-based salary and equity, publishing diversity and inclusion reports, and performance reviews. Uber also subjects its employees to diversity training as well. In June Uber’s founder and CEO was pushed out of the company following Susan Fowler, a former worker for the company, writing about experiencing sexism and harassment while employed at the company. Several other former employees have come forward with claims of sexual harassment or improper handling of racial discrimination claims.
Uber sounds like it needs to clean up it’s act or the company is going to be taken over completely by Lyft. Hopefully the new CEO will get to the bottom of the problems in the company. I would not be surprised if Uber was guilty of gender discrimination though as many companies still are guilty of this.
The second article I found was about an e-cigarette brand called Juul that is under investigation for possibly targeting minors. The e-cigarettes carry as much nicotine as a full pack and come in many colorful skins and flavors. Juul has apparently been growing very popular around middle and high schoolers. They are being investigated for properly monitoring retailers to make sure they are not selling to minors, any marketing to minors, and if Juul is violating state law by preventing minors from buying its products.
I hope Juul is not marketing to minors. Regardless if minors are smoking e-cigs or cigarettes, nicotine is a nasty habit to pick up and kick. It took me years to finally quit and I hope someone is making these teenagers and this company realize how dangerous nicotine really is.
