The First Colonies

In the other thread, I mentioned the Puritan settlement at Plymouth, Massachusetts. However, was this the first European settlement in the New World? What other colonies were there and who did they belong to? How do you think both the culture of the colonists and the geography of the areas they settled affect the development of the future US?
