The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” recounts the statesman and activist’s time as a slave in pre-Civil War Maryland. Published in 1845, nearly two decades prior to the Emancipation Proclamation, “The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” was an important publication for the Abolition movement. It remains a landmark biography of American history.

In the “Narrative,” Douglass discusses both his time in Talbot County, Maryland and in Baltimore. He discusses the indignity of life as a slave and the steps that he took to escape the inhumanity of slave life. For your assignment, identify the concepts of freedom as Douglass discusses it in the “The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass.” Consider the following questions: • How does Douglass describe slavery in Talbot County and in Baltimore? • What steps does Douglass take to obtain freedom? What were some of the key factors in his quest for freedom? • How do certain individuals in his life as a slave aid Douglass in attaining freedom? • How do certain individuals in his life as a slave hinder Douglass in attaining freedom?

Your essay should include a thesis statement that creates an argument about Douglass’ quest for freedom and the means by which he worked tirelessly to obtain freedom from slavery.
