Write a two to three page essay on the following. The presidential election of 1876 was a contested election. At one point it seemed that the Democratic candidate would win. However, as a result of a deal the Republican party made with some southern Democrats, the electoral votes were counted in a manner that allowed the Republican presidential candidate, to win the election. What was the "deal" the Republican party struck with some southern Democrats? How did the "deal" serve both the Republicans and southern Democrats? Does this "deal" have a legacy that we still see today? Explain your answer.
