There are THREE PARTS to this assignment:

My Chosen Topic is (Effects of Obesity on Human Cognitive and Social Development )

PART 1: The annotated bibliography (15 points).  Write an annotated bibliography for two academic, peer-reviewed journal articles you have found related to your topic. For each article, you will write two short paragraphs.  The first paragraph will be a short summary of the article, and second paragraph will be an assessment of the source.   Follow the description below under 'Annotated Bibliography' for instructions on how to write your summary and assessment of each of these 2 articles for this section of the assignment.*  Be sure to include the full APA citation for EACH article. See the Writing Guidelines posted for help citing, and visit MaryAnne Hanson at the MSU library if you are having trouble finding articles.

PART 2: (5 points) Provide a brief description of what you have found so far in your inquiry on your topic.  Include what other information your have found so far on your topic OTHER than your annotated bibliography information (non-academic sources, etc.).     Also, any observations you’ve made, interviews, field trips you've done, etc.

PART 3: (5 points) Identify what you still need to do for this project, including going on observation field trips (if applicable to your topic) and/or conducting interviews, doing your cross-cultural comparison research, etc. Describe your ideas and preparations so far for who you might interview for you topic. You need to interview one PROFESSIONAL related to your topic (this could be a professor who does research related to your topic, or a professional working in a field related to your topic.)  You can also perform additional interviews with other people who have had experience with your topic, but who aren't professionals. See the writing guidelines posted for instructions on how to cite these interviews for this project.

Background and Explanation

Part of the requirement for instructors of "IS" courses is to provide evidence that students have "improved" their critical thinking and writing skills over the semester.  Part of your Inquiry Project includes the PROCESS of writing, therefore you will have the opportunity to work on your written paper in stages.  The goal is that you will get feedback on your writing throughout the semester, and hopefully produce a high quality FINAL paper at the end of the semester.   I encourage you to be open to feedback about the paper (this is NOT feedback or criticism of YOU as a person) to learn how to improve your academic writing and research abilities.

Annotated Bibliography (Part 1 of this assignment)

Two of your references for this project MUST be from peer-reviewed, academic journals.  You are required to have at least four credible OUTSIDE sources for this paper, in addition to your professional interview (so a minimum of five outside references.)  In addition, you may have additional interviews, the course textbook (this does not count as an outside source--outside sources are from sources you found on your own, not material that you have found from our course--FEAs, the textbook, etc.  You may use any of these sources for your paper, but they don't count as one of the four outside sources), and other references from your exploration of the topic.   All of your references must be cited in APA (American Psychological Association) format (including hanging indents) both in the body of your paper and in a separate reference section.

*For the Annotated Bibliography assignment that you need to do for this project, you need to list two academic references from peer-reviewed journals, and then have a brief description of each one.

Following each of the citations for your journal articles, there should be two, separate, short paragraphs.  One paragraph should be a "Summary" of the reference.  The summary should be  3 - 5 sentences long (1 – 2 sentences is not adequate – 7 or more is not concise enough).  This summary should not be a simple copy/paste of an abstract – it needs to be written in your own words to describe your understanding of the article.

The second paragraph should be an "Assessment" of the reference.  The assessment should defend the credibility of the reference.  Credibility criteria includes items such as: how recently the reference was published, the quality of publication (i.e., peer-reviewed journal, respected newspaper i.e., The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Huffington Post, The Los Angeles Times, a government report, a university-sponsored site), the thoroughness of citing references within the publications and expertise of author(s) (level of education, place of employment, other publications they have, membership in associations, etc.).  Do your best to try to analyze the quality of the reference.  Again, talk to the reference libraries if you are struggling.

Then be sure to complete Parts 2 & 3 of this assignment described above.
