Thesis analysis
The purpose of the thesis analyses is to 1) help students to understand what a master thesis looks like as a whole and 2) the role of methodology and methods in theses. The task is performed as following:
You will receive one thesis that has been written by using qualitative methods and one thesis that has been written using quantitative methods. You have carefully reads and writes analyses of the two theses they receive. You also prepare a presentation of one of the two theses they receive according to instructions from the lecturer. You will have 10-15 minutes time to present the analysis of the selected thesis. There will be 5-10 minutes time for the class and the lecturer to ask questions/discuss about the presented thesis.
The written analysis should be approximately 600-700 words for each of the two theses. You have certain freedom in writing your analysis and building your presentations while the following questions can be used as an inspiration/guideline:
- What is the purpose of the thesis; is it e.g. explanatory or exploratory? Does it build theory or test theory?
- Are the research questions relevant; not too wide or too narrow? Are the research questions possible to answer and do the authors of the thesis actually answer their questions?
- What is/are the data collection method(s) and the data analysis method(s)?
- Are the selected methods appropriate for answering the research questions?
- How are theory and empirical data used together in order to create new knowledge?
- Have the author(s) of the thesis described their research process and evaluated the reliability/trustworthiness of the thesis?
- What would you have done differently if you were the authors of this thesis?
