This research essay will examine a specific event within the first 1600 years of Christianity that occurred as a result of religious, political, and social change. Students will research scholarly articles and books that address these events and the potential reasons for their occurrence, outcome, or success. Students must select a minimum of five academic sources that pertain to their selected essay topic and students must also set out aclear thesis statement in the introductory paragraph. *Wikipedia and other non-academic web sites may NOT be used as sources for this essay. The essay should be 5-6 pages in length (approx. 1,750-2,100 words) and include an introduction, several sections appropriately organized containing evidence for your argument, and a concluding paragraph. This page count does NOT include the title page and bibliography. Students must also include a thesis statement or main argument in theirpaper. The thesis statement should be placed at the end of the introductory paragraph. The essay must conform to standard stylistic practices (1” margins, 12-point Times New Roman, title page, page numbers, footnotes, bibliography, indentation of quotations longer than four lines, etc.). Students can use either APA, MLA, or Chicago style of citation but citation style must be consistent throughout the essay and there should be both in-text citations and a bibliography. Possible Topics:#1 – Parting of the Ways. One of the most contentious scholarly questions about early Christianity is linked to the separation of Christianity and Judaism – when exactly can wedefine these as distinct traditions? Research this issue and construct a thesis statement on whether you think an earlier or later dating of this separation is plausible and why. What sort of evidence can be used to make an assessment? How do scriptural references contribute to a definitive answer on this issue?#2 - The Crusades. Describe the historical impetus for the Crusades and explain how various political, religious, and social factors contributed to this endeavour. For example, historians have argued that Christians wanted control of the Holy Land but were there other factors at play (ie. economic and political) that influenced the decision to invade? How did the motivations of crusaders differ among various groups? How might they havebeen different from those in power (ie. The Pope)?Winter 2022#3 - The Protestant Reformation. Scholars have argued that there were many contributingfactors that led to the Protestant Reformation including religious, social, political, and economic. Explain the how these different socio-historical elements led to division and debate within the Catholic Church. Focus your essay on two specific Reformers (ie. Martin Luther, John Calvin, Ulrich Zwingli, Thomas Müntzer, etc.) and compare/contrasttheir views (theological, social, political, economic, etc.) to illustrate the differences that existed within Reformation thought and explain potential reasons as to why those differences existed. Essays will be graded on presentation (format, title page, citations, spelling, grammar, etc.), style (coherence of argument, structure of essay, etc.), content, thesis statement, andreferences (Chicago style, proper footnote format, use of references, quality of references, etc.)
