This semester we have engaged with a variety of historical narratives centering the broadLatina/o/x community. Your final paper asks you to distill the knowledge you have gained into afinal paper analyzing Tobar’s The Tattooed Soldier.Broadly, your final paper should discuss how the novel tackles major themes in Latina/o/xStudies like immigration, race, U.S. intervention in Latin America, labor exploitation, languagebarriers, homelessness, indigeneity, machismo, and political ideologies. You do not need todiscuss all of the themes listed above and you can also elaborate on a theme different from theseas well.Your paper can answer questions like: how does the novel capture the connections between U.S.intervention in Latin America and immigration from those countries to the U.S.? How doesTobar deal with race, especially indigeneity? Why are Latino immigrants vulnerable tohomelessness or labor exploitation in the U.S.? How is machismo depicted in the novel?Like with the midterm paper, there are many different directions you can take this paper. The keyis to base your arguments on the novel and create an argument based on that textual evidence. Nooutside research is required nor warranted. If you believe another class reading can bolster yourargument then you can include that but please your sources to the assigned class material.
