Brazil is a country that has experienced a vast amount of political and economic change in recent years. Cultural attitudes however, have remained more static during this time of change. The Hofstede Centre's Cultural Comparison Tool (https://www.hofstede-insights.com/country-comparison/brazil/ (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.) provides quantifiable metrics that compares dimensions such as Power Distance, Individualism, Masculinity, Uncertainty Avoidance, Long Term Orientation, and Indulgence. The greatest discrepancies when comparing Brazil to the United States involves the ideas of Power Distance, Individualism, and Uncertainty Avoidance. Differences in these societal monoliths can almost certainly lead to conflict if not properly taken into consideration.

The degree to which inequality is accepted by the population amongst is encompassed by the Power Distance dimension. In the case of the most populous South American country, historical factors such as a long period of colonialism, followed by populist reform, and unfair trade agreements have contributed to the ongoing pervasiveness of both fiscal and social inequality (Griesse 2007). An American business looking to expand to this country should be willing to adapt its practices based on the aforementioned differences in cultural dimensions between the two countries.

An American company doing business in Brazil for example, could potentially alienate upper management by having a culture that provides few added benefits in comparison with lower tiered employees. This could be remedied by implementing a policy of asking specific probing questions during an interview to gain better insight into the prospective candidate's sentiment on Power Distance.
