Topic Choice: Do Transgender Athletes Have an Unfair Advantage
In our course PROJECT, you’ll explore a contemporary moral problem of your choice. Your research should yield a greater understanding of the history, causes, conditions of your specific topic. You also will explore possible solutions.
Make the writing sweat and short. It might look a lot but it is not.
1. Formulate the Problem
a. State & explain your topic.
b. Explain the main moral issue(s) you’ll address as related to your topic.
c. Define key terms.
2. Search Out Stories Related to Your Moral Problem
When we get to Step #3, you’ll do more typical research, looking for data, etc. In this week's Step #2, we’ll focus on STORIES.
Novels, movies, articles, videos, interviews can all be used as source material. These stories help us humanize the problem, expand our understanding of how this problem affects individuals and groups in a multitude of ways, increase our understanding of why this problem is important and pressing.
a. Search for and find at least 3 stories related to your topic.
Articles, interviews, novels, movies, videos are all possible source materials.
b. Write up your results by providing (i) a title, (ii) a description, and (iii) a citation for each story source.
I don’t care which citation style you use. Here’s a useful resource –

3. Identify Possible Solutions
This activity gives you an opportunity to begin imagining solutions to the problem addressed in your topic. Neither of these solutions needs to be the one you focus on after you do more work in future project steps. Still, I want you to begin thinking about what solutions are possible for your topic as a whole or for a smaller part of your topic. These solutions may be ones that others have proposed or ones that you created.
a. Identify a possible solution and write at least 1 substantial paragraph describing it.
b. Identify an alternative solution and write at least 1 substantial paragraph describing it.
