Two streams flow into a mixer and produce a blended product: stream 1 contains 10.0 wt% ethanol and 90.0 wt% hexane and stream 2 contains
85.0 wt% ethanol and 15.0 wt% hexane. The process produces 40 kg/hr of ethanol,
but there is also some hexane in the mixture.
(a) Draw a schematic of the process and label what is know and unknown. (5 pts)
(b) Do you have enough information to find the mass flow rates in kg/hr for all three streams (stream 1, stream 2 and product, stream 3)? Do a degrees of freedom analysis to determine this. (5 pts)
(c) Assuming a basis of 100 kg/hr total mass flow rate for the product stream, solve for the flow rates of streams 1 and 2 as well as for the kg/hr of hexane in the product stream. (10 pts)
