Research paper proposal: I am writing about the gender roles in the short story by Ernest Hemingway "Hills like White Elephants”. I found this to be very interesting to me because gender roles are an extremely argumentative topic in literature and the world around us. As a reader I commonly enjoy reading about the equality of gender roles or having the same opportunities to fulfil their potential in all spheres of life. The roles of men and women portrayed in Ernest Hemingway's “Hills like White Elephants” are distinctly different and they do not have equal rights, causing them to fight against societal expectations. I plan to prove that gender roles in the view of society's expectations, showing they are different and do not have equal rights, through the short story Hills like White Elephants.

I've researched briefly the topic of gender roles around the world on the school provided databases. Through the Gale database I found where Jane Roberts discusses in her academic journal that “If human beings are to have decent lives, if there is to be any hope for the environment and any chance for a peaceful, stable future, girls and boys, women and men must be equal in all realms”(Roberts). I believe this is a good start for me researching what society thinks are the roles of each man and woman. As I go deeper into my research I plan to find why these roles are not equal.

I will prove that societal aspects of gender roles are distinctively different and that they are not equal, causing individuals to rebel against societal norms. The gender roles in the Hills like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway's play a big part in the research paper providing a great incite of how we view the roles of both men and women.

This is my research paper proposal to help you in the right direction of the paper.
