T2 - TITI1.4 - 1T2 - TISWINBURNE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGYSCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND SCIENCEHES1935 INTERNAL COMBUSTION AND GAS TURBINE ENGINESGAS TURBINEThermodynamicsExpt No. .AIM:To determine the external characteristics of a simplegoverned open cycle gas turbine.EQUIPMENT:earmuffs.Rover gas turbine set, barometer, stop watch, hydrometer,OPERATION :The relation of torque and brake power to speed dependsto a large extent on the governor sensitivity to speedchange . In the governed speed range the power output isdetermined by the rate at which fuel is delivered to thecombustion chamber; this, in turn, depends on the fueldelivery pressure. The centrifugal governor operates ableed valve on the discharge side of a three cylinderswash plate pump. A manually operated fuel by-passvalve can be used to idle the machine. Also a thermaloverload device sensing exhaust temperature starts toby-pass fuel when the exhaust temperature exceedsapproximately 600 C. This is one reason why the machinestalls fairly rapidly beyond this exhaust temperature.METHOD:1.Check the oil and fuel. It may be necessary to topup the fuel tank during the run.2 .Ensure an adequate water supply to the dynamometer andoil cooler, then zero the dynamometer.3.To keep the test time to a minimum, arrange for allmembers in the group to have a specific job readingone or more gauges etc., then get together afterwards. An instructor will start the machine and the test cancommence immediately. Proceed in steps of single turnson the dynamometer gates wheel.4.Do not proceed beyond either an exhaust Temperature of600 C or any load which produces a marked speed reduction. In the event of a continuous speed drop (stall) unloadthe dynamometer then shut the burner valve if necessary.Do not let the fuel drop out of sight in the burette.RECORDING :Note all readings on the instrument panel and dynamometerand include the following: run number, oil pressure, oiltemperature, barometer, ambient temperature.REPORT :1 .For each run calculate :(a)Brake power(b)Torque(c)Fuel consumption rate(d)Thermal efficiency(e)Compressor isentropic( f )efficiencyAir mass flow rate(g)Turbine isentropiceffiency.. . . ./ 2
