Assignment: Our behaviors are the means by which we communicate our thoughts and emotions. How we choose to behave can have a lasting impact on how the world perceives us. Please complete Parts I, II, and III of this assignment.

Part I

• Provide a formal definition of aggressive behavior.
• Please share an example of a time when you observed someone behaving aggressively. What did the person do or say that made his or her behavior aggressive?
• Do you believe that the person’s aggression was likely due to nature or nurture? Explain why.  

Part II

• Provide a formal definition of assertive behavior.
• Please share an example of a time when you behaved assertively in a situation. What did you do or say that made your behavior assertive?
• Do you believe that your assertiveness was likely due to nature or nurture? Explain why.  

Part III

• Provide one visual image to represent aggression and one visual image to represent assertiveness. Be creative!

Assignment:  Valarie and Thomas have been a couple for nearly 6 months when Thomas is offered a job in another state. Valarie has a year left in school and plans to join Thomas when she finishes her program.  After a month apart, Valarie hears from a friend of a friend that Thomas has been spending some time with a female coworker from his new team. Valarie trusts Thomas and does not sense any changes in his behavior. However, she is concerned that he has not mentioned his new friend to her. Valarie decides to confront Thomas but worries that if she is wrong he will be upset by her mistrust of him.  Please complete Parts I, II, and III of this assignment.

Part I

• Based on Neal Miller’s (1944) research of conflict approaches, what type of conflict would best describe Valarie’s dilemma? Explain why your choice was the best fit given Valarie’s situation.  

Part II

• Based on Adler, Proctor II, and Towne’s (2005) problem-solving model, what problem-solving style should Valarie use to present her concerns to Thomas?   
• Explain how both Valarie and Thomas are impacted by her choice. 

Part III

In the end, Valarie discovers there is no truth to her friend’s observations and accusations, and Thomas has been faithful to her.

• How does Valarie cope with the strain this confrontation has put on their relationship?  
• What specific steps might Valarie take to help her to control her suspicions in the future?
