This was reinforced by the classic “three-legged stool” model of hospital operations in which management, governance, and medical staff were viewed as relatively separate and equal components. Under that model, codified in hospital accreditation standards from the (then) Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals (JCAH) (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals, 1975), management was responsible for hotel functions, the medical staff had an autonomous role in overseeing clinical care, and governance was more focused on fundraising than on oversight of management and the medical staff.
