You have been provided three articles on the potential benefits of exercise to prevent breast cancer.  Your assignment is to:

(1)  Describe each of the articles and their findings.  Be sure to critique these.  For example:

  1. Who was the population, how many were there and where did they find them? Is this likely to produce bias?
  2. How did they assess physical activity? Is this an accurate assessment?
  3. How did they assess cancer outcomes and how long did the follow these people?
  4. How strong was the relationship between physical activity and breast cancer?
  5. What gives you confidence in the results and what makes you question the results?

(2)  Analyze each article.  This should be in the form of comparison to the 7 aspects of causality that are in the notes from the epidemiology lecture.

(3)  Integrate your analysis.

  1. Describe the pattern of effects across studies.

                                               i.     Is the pattern the same for each?

                                              ii.     Is the size of the effect similar?

  1. How do the strengths of one study balance the weakness of another study?

(4)  Provide an overall assessment of the three studies.  To do so, again use the criteria for causality but do so as a group.

You are welcome to return to the original articles, but this is not necessary – you have sufficient information here.  I want you to focus on the RR.  No other statistics are important.  For example, do not worry about describing a logistic regression.

You are encouraged to meet with small groups to discuss these articles and interpret them.  You are also encouraged to scheduled a meeting with the TA for this purpose.

Please use APA format for references – this should be each of the three assigned articles.  A guide to these has been posted on blackboard.

You will each review the work of three other students and receive a review from the TA.  You will then revise based on these reviews for the final paper.
