UNIT 1 DISCUSSION INSTRUCTIONS: Below are four pairs of statements relating to basic issues of human development. Read each statement carefully and select the statement in each pair that reflects your view more closely. There are no right or wrong answers. Think critically about your views.Statement 1. Development is a continuous process in which new abilities, skills, and knowledge are added gradually.Development occurs at varying rates, alternating between periods of little change and periods of abrupt, rapid transformation.Statement 2. All humans follow the same general sequence of development. Each individual has a unique development course, depending on personal and environmental circumstances.Statement 3. Children respond to the world in much the same way as adults, except that children′s thinking is less sophisticated and complex than that of adults.Children have unique ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving that are very different from those of adults.

Unit 1 Discussion
After reading the statements provided, I chose “Development is a continuous process in which new abilities, skills, and knowledge are added gradually. Development occurs at varying rates, alternating between periods of little change and periods of abrupt, rapid transformation.” The concept that aligns with this statement is Erik Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial Development. Specifically, this theory holds that humans go through eight distinct stages of development covering the entire lifespan (Orenstein & Lewis, 2022). Based on this perspective, the theory aligns with my thoughts since it emphasizes that growth and development are not instantaneous but occur in various distinct identifiable stages across an individual’s lifespan.
Nevertheless, I believe that one theory cannot explain human development across the lifespan although it can offer helpful insights. Psychological studies show that human development is a complex process influenced by multiple factors, making it challenging to explain using a single theory. Psychologically, these factors include psychosocial, sociocultural, and biological components (Orenstein & Lewis, 2022). Other factors that may influence human development include cultural variations and interactions between nature and nurture. Therefore, integrating different theories when explaining human development is necessary. Such an idea is crucial since it can allow us to consider the complexity of human development and the diversity of experiences across the lifespan. This approach also would permit a more accurate understanding of how humans develop and transform over time throughout their lifespan. However, my thoughts do not trash any theory of human development in psychology but encourage the need to embrace a broader base of understanding rather than depending on one theory. We can better explain our development and the growth of others by embracing a broader base of knowledge or understanding.
